About Porto, Portugal

Famous for its six imposing bridges and its medieval old town, Porto is home to hilly streets, leafy park areas, golden beaches and friendly natives. Situated along the Douro River, this is the second most important city in Portugal and can be found in the north of the country.

Thanks to its location, Porto generally boasts mild winters and warm summers. Around 220,000 people call this city home, with large numbers of visitors increasing this number each year.

The historic centre of the city has been designated a World Heritage site, and here's where you'll find some of Porto's main attractions, including the Clérigos Tower, the São Bento railway station and the Ribera area.

The city's top export is the world-renowned Port wine, and there are plenty of places all over Porto where you can sample this famous tipple. You can also visit the 'caves' where this wine is aged across the river from Porto in the Gaia area.

Porto has some great beaches for visitors to enjoy. Make the short metro trip from the city centre to Matosinhos and you'll be able to enjoy golden sands. Surfing is pretty popular in this area too.

Between Matosinhos and Porto itself, you'll find the coastal area of Foz do Douro. Here you can walk along the shoreline or watch the waves come in from your seat at one of the many beachside bars and restaurants.
